The RS200 EaSea Tour at Warsash Sailing Club was an event that truly lived up to the hype. Having visited the club for work purposes in the past, I was eager to experience the sailing myself. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. The club's YouTube videos had set the bar high, and the day did not fail to deliver an exhilarating experience.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the challenging conditions. With 25-knot gusts and an inconsistent Solent chop, the race course was a thrilling arena. The RS200s, with their bulkier counterparts in the RS600 and RS400 fleets, had to navigate a racecourse full of opportunity, all while dealing with the perfect course position East of Calshot. It was a true test of skill and boat handling.
One of the most memorable moments was watching Ollie Evans and Zoe Nieveen glide past downwind after rounding the windward mark. Their mastery of the boat and conditions was on full display, setting the tone for the day. The shifts in the breeze kept teams on their toes, making it difficult to concentrate on both the start and the course at the same time.

Ollie and Zoe settled serenely into second place until the final reach. A colossal puff whacked both boats downwind of the rhumb line, and frantically dousing canvas to get to the finish line. A battle ensued to retain positions as Bex and I, and Ben Whaley and Isobel Stewart hounded after the leaders, having dropped our chutes prior. Ian/Emma and Ollie/Zoe showed their class and composure to hold onto their hard-earned places by a whisker, but this incident was a sign of the breeze to come for the rest of the day.
While the leaders were fortunate to ride this puff along the reach, the chasing pack was suddenly faced with the need to gybe to lay the final mark. While some fell victim to the now even windier conditions, racing largely remained hard-fought until the finish. What a boat the RS200 is.
The final races saw a somewhat diminished fleet enjoy hard-fought beats and delightful sleigh rides downwind, now with the added complexity of clumps of weed to dodge. Special mention goes to Jamie Harris and Ellen Main, who stormed to victory in the final race.
